Admissions
Criteria
The
school offers four academic programmes: traditional British Advanced Level subjects (A
Levels), the internationally recognised and highly regarded International Baccalaureate
Diploma (IB),
vocational courses (VCE - Vocational A-levels)
introduced in September 2001, and a programme which allows students to combine
elements of A Level, VCE, and IB. This is
a very flexible academic programme available only in one or two schools.
The IB is a broad-based
course fully recognised as an entry qualification to higher education both in the UK and
internationally. Entry requirements for external candidates for IB courses are: a minimum
of six GCSE passes at Grade C or above with Grade B (or equivalent) passes in those
subjects proposed for study at Higher Level. If a subject which is to be studied at Higher
Level has not previously been studied, evidence of equivalent potential will be required.
Overseas students not in possession of the British GCSE qualification will need to
demonstrate equivalent academic potential.
Advanced Level courses
require a minimum of a Grade B GCSE pass in each of those subjects to be studied at
A-Level. There must also be two more GCSE passes at Grade C or above, one of which must be
English Language. If a subject which is to be studied at A level has not previously been
studied, evidence of equivalent potential will be required. These are absolute minima, and
certain subjects will require specific grades.
The vocational A-Level programme (formerly
known as Advanced GNVQ) will lead to the award of Advanced Vocational Certificate
in Education (AVCE). The matriculation requirement will be 5 grade Cs at GCSE including
English Language. Please see the
VCE
- Vocational A-levels page for more details.
All prospective students will
be interviewed and a conditional offer will subsequently be made. Students who fail to
achieve the offer grades will be subject to a further clearance in early September.
As the only local provider of
the International Baccalaureate, the school looks favourably on interest from external
students from Essex or further afield. Incoming A-Level students are also welcomed.
However, pressure for places from existing students usually limits the places available
for incoming A-Level students.
The Sixth
Form
A thriving Sixth Form of over 200 students follows one of these
programmes, and all continue with the study of at least one language other than English.
Mathematics, Science, English, Art and Economics are also strongly represented, with
students averaging over five subject disciplines each.
Key
Skills form an integral part of the Sixth Form
curriculum. The qualification assesses students' skills in communication and
ICT.
Our Sixth Form students are involved in a wide range of activities:
-
Overseas visits
-
Theatre visits
-
Biology and Geography field courses
-
Sports
-
European conferences
-
Model United Nations activities
-
The Euro-Frederiskvaerk Programme

The
International Baccalaureate Programme
This provides an academic
alternative to 'A' Levels. The IB Diploma is highly valued by Universities and
professional bodies both in the UK and across the world. Students matriculate with a
balanced qualification drawn from six subject areas. Three subjects will be studied at
Higher Level and three at Standard Level, the choice of which is open to the student. Each
student must choose one subject from each of the following groups:

*subject to availability
Details of the courses in each
subject can be obtained in the Sixth Form Handbook. In certain exceptional circumstances,
candidates can study for a Diploma that consists of a slightly different combination of
subjects e.g. students may study a third science instead a subject from Group 3, but this
must be approved by the International Baccalaureate Office.
In addition to these
requirements each candidate must submit an Extended Essay which is, in effect, a piece of
research in one of their six subjects and they must attend classes and submit coursework
in Theory of Knowledge, which is a training in logical, philosophical and judgmental
thought. Evidence has to be given of some consistent Creative, Sporting and Service work
throughout the two years.
The grades for the Diploma
range from 7 to1, 7 being the highest and 1 the lowest. To obtain a Diploma a minimum of
24 points has to be obtained. Candidates can obtain additional points for an outstanding
Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge assessment.
As can be seen this
examination is demanding, calling not only for orthodox learning and examination
techniques, but for independent research and oral fluency.
