Why Join Us?

Our distinct international ethos, which sits at the heart of our Sixth Form and influences the curriculum and the range of opportunities offered, develops our students into open-minded, principled and globally aware citizens. Students join us from other schools in Essex and London but also from Europe and around the world giving you a unique experience of different cultures and points of view in classes and through meeting new friends

This is the only school or college in this area which offers you the chance to study the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP) or A Levels including vocational A Level equivalents and an EPQ or a mixture of elements of all three through the AIB or IB Career Programme routes

We have excellent examination results with our students achieving on average in 2016 the equivalent of ABB grades at A Level across all our qualifications, and an outstanding record for students obtaining university places.  In recent years for example our students gained places at Cambridge, Bristol, Warwick, Exeter, UCL and overseas institutions such as the Chinese University of Hong Kong, UCAL Berkley and the University of British Columbia to read subjects such as Economics, French, German, Law, Medicine, History of Art and South East Asian Studies, with around 90% of the Upper Sixth normally progressing to university.  In 2016, 79% met the offer from their first choice university, whilst 42% achieved a place at one of the UK Russell Group universities

In common with the rest of the school, the Sixth Form has an international ethos and all students are expected to maintain foreign language study at some level ranging from introductory level through to IBH or A2 level in languages such as German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin. Whichever level you choose, it is our experience that studying a language in the Sixth Form makes our students stand out to both admissions tutors and employers alike

The opportunity exists to participate in study visits abroad and overseas work experience placements.  In recent years for example Sixth Form students have been involved in visits to Madrid, Shanghai, Lesotho, the United Nations in Geneva, and have taken part in international conferences in Alden Biesen in Belgium, and the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Other students have had the opportunity to take part in work experience placements in Frankfurt, Madrid, and Avignon in France

All students have the chance to benefit from an expanding extra-curricular programme where they are given responsibility and can show leadership qualities. Just some of the opportunities available include: Paired Reading with Lower School students, organising the Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party, organising the Sixth Form Prom, responsibility for the Year 10 Model United Nations Conference, running the French Culture Society, Debate Society and Law Mooting Society, organising initiatives associated with Amnesty International, Music Concerts, our range of Sports Teams, Duke of Edinburgh Award, First Aid Courses

There are excellent study facilities dedicated to Sixth Form students including a well-equipped silent study area with its own suite of computers (open daily from 8am to 5.30pm), an additional study area where students can work collaboratively and a dedicated section of the Library. Wifi is also available in the Sixth Form area

The school has developed a unique 2 week development expedition to Lesotho in South Africa where AES students will make a significant difference to this particular community through development community work on a bi- annual basis. World Challenge also offers the possibility of joining an expedition to places such as Pakistan, Peru, Namibia, Thailand and Cambodia.  For example in 2017 students are travelling to  Nicaragua to take part in overseas local community development work

Employability: supported by our excellent careers advice programme which aims to facilitate work experience opportunities and includes the chance to meet employers across a range of occupations, the corollary of all this is that by the time you are ready to leave us you will be an attractive applicant for whichever future path you choose
