For more than 40 years the Anglo European School has been committed to achieving the highest academic success through its distinct internationalist curriculum. Situated in the village of Ingatestone, this state comprehensive provides an education within a caring and cosmopolitan environment. It was the first state specialist language school in Britain to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma and the International Baccalaureate Career Programme. The international dimension is present in every subject area. Our unique curriculum, based on the philosophy of the International Baccalaureate, encourages our students to learn to be enquiring, self-reflecting, resilient global citizens. The Diplôme du Citoyen accredits the impact the special nature of the school has on each student.
All Year 7 students take two languages from French, Spanish and German with the exception of those studying Chinese who take this subject only as it has a double timetable allocation. Dedicated study of Chinese continues through to Year 11, culminating in entry for GCSE. In Year 8 most students continue with the two languages studied in Year 7 which are pursued through to GCSE. However these students can elect to drop one language at the end of Year 7 and pick up Italian, Japanese or Russian instead. Hence most students take two language GCSE’s, other than those on the MEP (Mandarin Excellence Programme) and a few weaker linguists who are supported through the WJEC qualification. In this way we endeavour to accommodate the needs of all our students and offer the best possible choice. All students in the Sixth Form study at least one language and a range of courses are available from which to choose. We offer A Levels in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese and Chinese as well as the highly acclaimed International Baccalaureate Diploma at ab initio, standard and higher level. We also offer entry level qualifications across a range of languages.
A remarkable feature of the school is its Study Visits Programme. All Year 7 students take part in a study visit to France. A network of international partner schools enable the Anglo to provide family exchanges and study visits in Europe, China and Japan, usually lasting ten days. There are extended study visits to Lyon, Girona and Frankfurt in Year 10 lasting 4 and 8 weeks respectively during which students follow the curriculum of our partner schools and work independently for their GCSE subjects. Sixth Form students also have the opportunity to undertake international work experience in Madrid, Frankfurt and Paris. Typically, 700 students participate each year and 500 partners visit the school. All students in Year 10 are required to undertake work experience for two weeks, some of which is organised abroad.
All students have the opportunity to benefit from using up-to-date information technology. The six main computer rooms and the library have access to a semi‑filtered version of the Internet and enable students to develop their research skills and locate information including authentic materials in many languages. We run a Study Club, before and after school and at lunchtime, for students to start or complete independent learning activities, homework and coursework. The club is supervised and managed by our Study Club Manager, who is well acquainted with our ethos and desire for all students to reach their true potential, whilst being understanding of the pressures homework can cause if resources are not easily to hand at home.
As you can see, one feature of the school is the breadth of its curriculum. For instance, the Anglo is currently one of the highest performing comprehensive schools in the country with regard to the English Baccalaureate. The 11-16 curriculum is inspired by the International Baccalaureate’s Middle Years Programme.
The quality and success of Sixth Form provision was particularly praised in our most recent OFSTED report and is outstanding. The school accepts new students from other schools at Sixth Form level. There has been a long and successful tradition of A-Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP). The IB offers students a balanced curriculum through its choice of six subjects from various academic disciplines and its CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) programme. The Diploma is highly regarded by UK universities and recognised both by universities and employers world-wide. A-Level students have the flexibility of taking single certificate qualifications from the IB programme in addition to A-Level subjects, thus adding breadth to their curriculum. In 2010 we became the first school in the country to offer the IB Career Programme (IBCP). This is an internationally recognised course for students who want a more technical, vocational, applied programme. Applied A-Levels make up part of this course. This provides an exceptionally rich variety of courses. The CAS component of the Diploma is taken by all students, as is the requirement to study a language other than English. Many other activities further enrich the Sixth Form programme. Sixth Form students are characterised by their independent and outward looking approach and makes them stand out in the global employment marketplace.
