Computing and Digital Media

All students have discrete lessons in Key Stage 3 in dedicated computer suites. Students follow a program of study that covers:

  • E-Safety: Students recognise how to use technology safely and responsibly including protecting their online identity and privacy.
  • Computing: Students will understand the hardware and software components that make up computer systems, and how they communicate with one another and with other systems. They will learn how to create their own computer programs using Scratch, Python and Game Maker.
  • Media: Students will undertake creative projects such as image manipulation, website design, editing and creating print based media. Their study of online and print media will develop their understanding of media language, representation and target audiences.

KS3 Assessment: At the end of every unit students are assessed using one of the following strategies:

  • A formal test, either paper based or digital
  • An annotated piece of project work to highlight their understanding
  • A written evaluation of the work they have produced

OCR GCSE Computer Science

The GCSE Computer Science course (9-1) comprises of two examinations and a controlled assessment.

Computer Systems – 1h30min Examination – (40% of total course)

This component will introduce students to the Central Processing Unit (CPU), computer memory and storage, wired and wireless networks, network topologies, system security and system software. It is expected that students will become familiar with the impact of Computer Science in a global context through the study of the ethical, legal, cultural and environmental concerns associated with Computer Science.

Computational Thinking, Algorithms and Programming – 1h30min Examination (40% of total course)

This component incorporates and builds on the knowledge and understanding gained from the study of Computer Systems, encouraging students to apply this knowledge and understanding using computational thinking. Students will be introduced to algorithms and programming, learning about programming techniques, how to produce robust programs, computational logic, translators and facilities of computing languages and data representation. Students will become familiar with computing related mathematics.

Programming Project – 20 hours of controlled assessment (20% of total course)

In the controlled assessment task students must think computationally to solve a task and while doing so create a report detailing the creation of their solution, explaining what they did and why they did it.


From 2017 onwards students will be able to study GCSE media (9-1) as an optional subject. Media Studies is designed to widen the intellectual horizons of the learner through the analysis of a wide range of media forms and contexts.

Note: The new GCSE specifications are currently out for accreditation through Ofqual, so the information regarding this course is subject to change. We are currently looking to deliver the OCR course, but after accreditation if other examining bodies offer a more suitable course for our students we may use a different board.

Textual Analysis – 1h45min Examination (35% of total course)

Students will explore how media products follow generic conventions, use media language, represent events, issues, places, individuals and social groups, address audiences and reflect their industrial context.

Exploring media – 1h15min Examination (35% of total course)

Students will explore the range of media forms to exemplify media industry issues and practice creative tasks showing their knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework (media language, representation, audiences and media industries) as it applies to each form. Students will apply the theoretical framework and theoretical perspectives to three in-depth studies.

Creating Media – Non-Exam Assessment (30% of total course)

Students will create media products through applying knowledge and understanding of media language and representation from the theoretical framework to express and communicate meaning to an intended audience.
