Year 11 Mock Results

Congratulations to all our Year 11s on completing their mock GCSE examinations; today they discovered their results in a special assembly.  This time is designed to give them a real sense of what it would be like to open the envelope in the summer and discover what they have achieved, whether this be as expected, beyond or below their expectations and to reflect on their outcomes, revision techniques and exam strategies.  Mrs Wootton, Year Leader, spoke to the students about “Growth Mindset” and the power of the word “yet” in reflecting on results. Many students have not achieved their targets “yet” but are well on their way and have a clearer understanding of what help, advice and guidance is available to support them. Some of our Lower Sixth students shared their experiences of GCSE and told the students what they would do differently if they were now back in their Year 11 shoes.

Mrs Gee said, “We are very proud of our Year 11 students; they took this experience seriously and worked conscientiously towards their goals and many students were pleased were their results this morning, knowing these certificates were a reflection of their best efforts. We will continue to support, guide and encourage them in what is a challenging and stressful time for them all.”

Zoe Coppin, who is hoping to go on to study Mathematics, exceeded expectations as a result of her hard work  and determination to achieve her target grades said, “I am overwhelmed with these fantastic results, I never thought I would be able to get a 6 in English and A* in French and Spanish.”

Year 7 take part in Chinese painting workshops

On Friday 16th December, 7C went to the Southbank Centre for the launch of their new festival China Changing. The three year festival will showcase contemporary China and its creative influence and connections with the UK through art and culture. The students really enjoyed the opportunity to take part in Chinese painting workshops, listen to a dramatic recital of a Chinese myth, listen to traditional Chinese instruments, and participate in translation workshops. Seamus Mellon and Carla Turbides Coiscou formed part of the opening panel discussion and talked about their experiences learning Chinese and what it means to them, whilst Yan Morris and Tea Kaci gave short presentations in Mandarin Chinese.

Neon Disco for Year 7s

The U6 students organised the Year 7 disco as part of the Event Management Unit of their Applied Travel and Tourism A Level.  They chose a UV theme and encouraged Year 7s to raise extra money by having their faces painted and having photos with their friends in a homemade photo booth!  The DJ provided music and lights which created an authentic atmosphere in the Sports Hall and the school canteen provided refreshments to be served in the gallery of the sports hall.  The event ran from 6-8pm on the 24th November.

Senior Citizens Christmas Party 2016

Our U6 CAS students have spent this term organising our annual OAP Christmas party. The event was attended by over 50 local residents who enjoyed a buffet lunch and entertainment from drama students and the school choir. After a game of bingo, our guests each received a Christmas gift which were generously donated by local shops and our parents and students. Included in our guest list was a former Domestic Science teacher, a man who dug the first turf for the swimming pool and two members of the first intake into the school when it was Ingatestone Secondary Modern school.

The World of Work

Inevitably, the World of Work is an unknown place for many students when in their teens. Here at the Anglo European School we provide numerous opportunities for our students to develop their enterprise and workplace skills with the aim of better equipping them to be more competitive and influential in the increasingly global workplace. From Enterprise days organised and delivered by our lower sixth IBC cohort with some “experts” on hand where students consider the ethical, social and moral responsibilities of opening a business, to work experience placements locally, nationally and internationally spanning the globe from Japan to Brazil alongside international work experience exchanges, our young people are repeatedly gaining an insight into the skills and attitudes required in the workplace.

A World of Work day is held comprising employability skills workshops and a formal interview with external professionals and to our students delight they get networking at our Career Speed Dating event with the opportunity of a second date with professionals in specific spheres of work.  The positive benefits of these opportunities are clearly visible:- a greater focus on learning to achieve their aims, increased maturity to make informed career choices and the soft skills so crucial to success in the workplace but moreover preparing them not only for employment but for life developing into rounded and confident individuals.

The Winter Fair was a tremendous success

The School Association Winter Fair was a tremendous success.  All the students had lots of fun playing games such as tombola, table football, hoopla, splat the rat and Sjoelen. There were lots of different side stalls selling Christmas decorations, pottery etc. A festive photo booth was available to capture the moment.  Everyone tucked into the delicious Indian snacks, cakes and refreshments with gusto.  Sixth form students ran stalls to raise money for their visits to Nicaragua for World Challenge and Lesotho, Africa.

The students also had the opportunity to find out all about bees and bee keeping as Paul Wisbey, a local beekeeper, attended with a mock–up hive and other beekeeping equipment. Lots of questions were answered, with the students showed a keen interest in the subject.  Approximately £1,200 was raised from this event and we are fortunate that the company of one of our parents has kindly agreed to match fund doubling the amount.

A very unique day at Anglo for 40 Year 8 students

Wednesday, December 7th was a very unique day at Anglo for 40 extremely keen and conscientious Year 8 students. Funded and hosted by ‘The Smallpeice Trust’ ( www.smallpeicetrust.org.uk) we ran our first Smart Building STEM Day.(Science Technology Engineering and Maths). Eight teams of 5 students were set a task to enhance their understanding of, and aptitude for, problem solving, creativity, design and engineering. They had to build a watertight water-collection and filtration system that could be used to water the plants in a new eco design building. They also had to assemble and solder the components of an electronic water detection and pump system to empty the unit when filled to a certain level. The winning team were selected based on product performance, team work, aesthetics, cost and marketing. It was an exciting, challenging and enormously fun day throughout which our students worked cohesively with diligence and determination representing our school in the best possible light.

Furthermore eight students, of which six were girls, that individually showed an aptitude for and evidence of a list of qualities outlined by the trust were chosen to spend two full days at Essex university engaging with many other students from across the country in more STEM activities.

Extremely well done to all the students who entered the competition to attend this fantastic day.

Mandarin Speaking Competition

On Friday 2nd December, 8 students in the Lower Sixth and Year 10 participated in the London Regional Heat of the HSBC/British Council Mandarin Speaking Competition. This is a very prestigious annual competition and an excellent way to develop students’ speaking skills and motivation for learning the language. Emmie Bowlt (10T) and Sana Hassanali (L6LK) took part in the Individual Language Ability competition, while Agatha Cowland (10P), Anna Ionescu (10S), Elena Noguchi (10S), Anisha Vidal-Garner (L6AK), Alice Tunningley (L6MG) and Anjali Patel (L6TP) performed a song and drama in Mandarin for the group entry. The students all performed brilliantly and other schools commented on how impressive their language ability was. We will find out later this month whether we have reached the final, but students really enjoyed the competition and did Anglo proud!

Year 7s visit Cambridge University

Year 7s took part in a competition in relation to the Ovid Project.  The finalists, Mofi Aladejebi, Carys Balch, Sam Bland, Pria Bradstreet and Beth Robinson were selected to take part in this special day.  The Project was essentially to promote the importance of speaking and listening skills in English. They spent time listening to Ovid’s stories and interpreting them in different ways (art, drama, creative writing). It was also part of an outreach programme set up by the Classics Department at Newnham College to encourage students from state schools to consider classics at Cambridge at degree level.

Bob Lister (at Dept of Classics, University of Cambridge, Newnham College) said: “It is so wonderful to have so many students here and involved in this project. Hopefully it will encourage them to think about studying classics here at Cambridge.”

Mrs Bradstreet, English teacher: “The students worked brilliantly on this project, which focused on the stories of Ovid’s Metamorphosis. We were very proud to have all our entrants Highly Commended by the judges, who were impressed by the originality of the submissions.” Pria Bradstreet said: “I love Cambridge! I might come here.”

STEM Ambassador Visit

We were delighted to welcome Professor Marion Wooldridge to the school, who is a STEM ambassador with particular interest in aviation.  Her visit was of significance to the school because she is the cousin of the late Dame Margaret Anstee, who was so closely associated with the school.  She said “I am very impressed with the school.  Mr Barrs made me feel very welcome and the tour guides were charming”.
