Year 10 musicians participate in an Indian drum workshop

Over 30 GCSE Year 10 musicians from the Anglo European school participated in an Indian drum workshop with Essex Music Services teacher, Dan Sceats. The hour-long masterclass involved students using the traditional North Indian hand drum, the dholak, to create authentic Bhangra music. The practical lesson provided the opportunity to perform traditional Indian taala and learn about the influence of Western popular music on traditional music from the Punjab region. The masterclass culminated in an outstanding group performance in the school’s amphitheatre.

The school’s Head of Music, Mr Jon Gordon, said that “students really enjoyed the practical experience and the Arts faculty continues to build on the success of having recently receiving their Artsmark Gold award.” Further masterclasses are already being planned for next year and he hopes that the relationship with Essex Music services continues to thrive.
